He was surprisingly relaxed, often landing on the path and coming quite close, before flying up to perch on nearby branches and, briefly, on some low reed stems.” Maria McGrath

Bittern by David Pattrick: "On a recent visit to RSPB Minsmere I had been watching this Bittern from the Island Mere Hide for a while. Mostly it was hidden, then a Great White Egret arrived, no doubt to barge in on Bittern’s patch. The Bittern was decidedly unhappy and made this very clear with a wonderfully aggressive display!"

A very good friend explained that it was ‘lamellae’ – a comb-like serrated edge to the beak which functions like teeth to grip and tear the aquatic plants and algae that they feed on."
